In the early 2000s, Egypt’s tourism, once a popular destination, had declined notably. When Chris Mottershead became TUI UK’s Managing Director in 2001, he recognised Egypt’s untapped potential. Collaborating with hoteliers, he reintroduced flights to Sharm El Sheik, offering ultra-cheap All-Inclusive packages 50% cheaper than most TUI destinations. This move was possible because of the low cost of land and staff costs, combined with the ability to operate year-round. Hurghada soon joined as another destination, and Egypt quickly regained its status, with other tour operators following TUI’s lead.
